DIET CULTURE WANTS US TO FEAR EVERYTHING - Say Bye to Calorie Counting!

If you have read my “WHY - Whole Foods Plant based“ blog, you would understand why calorie counting is the biggest no-no for me. When I am working with my clients, my approach to healthy eating is much more that calories in vs calories out because NOT ALL CALORIES ARE EQUAL when it comes to your personal biology. To me, it is not sustainable nor is it fun to be nit-picky at everything you eat, especially when I LOVE FOOD and I’m sure most of you do too.

Food is not just energy for our bodies, it is tied deeply into our culture, social gatherings, day to day needs, and enjoyment!

Let these statements be rooted into our minds right now and remember the next time you feel the urge to count your calories or macros, or start a diet that tells you to cut an essential macronutrients, Walk THE FUCK AWAY! UNLESS YOU ARE AN PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE OR TRAINING FOR A VERY SPECIFIC RACE AND COMPETITION, YOU DO NOT NEED TO PUT YOURSELF THROUGH THIS VERY STRUCTURED WAY OF EATING.

  1. Calorie counting is restrictive, frustrating, and you’ll probably be hungry most of the time

  2. Calories = the amount of energy stored in food, but they cannot tell you how food will affect your appetite, blood sugar responses, blood fat responses, gut microbes, or how fast your body will digest it

  3. For example: 1 McDonald’s small fries = 1 avocado (around 350 calories)

  • Avocado is full of healthy fats, fiber, and it’s natural

  • Fries are full of unhealthy fats, no fiber, added salt and sugar, and processed

  • Unhealthy fats will trigger your blood fat and cause inflammation while healthy fats will help stabilize blood sugar and blood fat

  • Minimally processed plant foods are associated with “good” bugs for your gut health while highly processed foods (fries) will give you more “bad” bugs (please read my post on microbiome for more info)

By eating WFPB, you will be able to eat so much more in volume which will fill you up with nutrients and eventually lessen your cravings. By limiting your processed food intake, you will set the right internal environment for your gut. This can help you:

  • Increase your energy

  • Feel full longer

  • Have better focus and a clear mind

  • Improve your poopie time

  • Improve your immune system

  • Reach a healthier weight without forcing yourself to cut or eat less

  • LONG TERM HEALTH

NOW WHICH WOULD YOU RATHER EAT? Avocado or fries?

Once upon a time in the 90s, we were taught to fear fats, then in the 2000s we were taught to fear carbs, now let’s take charge of our own health and learn to eat (w)holistically. Start by adding some plants in your daily meals, then substitute or find new recipes that you will enjoy. We need to learn to eat intuitively and choose what is right for our own biology. I promise you will experience a better state of health, LONG TERM.
